Halloween is a time of the year kids and students of all ages should be able to enjoy. This is no exception for the students here at BHS. This year the Bruin Academy took this philosophy to heart with the beginning of a Halloween door decorating contest.

“The Bruin Academy is an alternative education program for students that are at a high risk of dropping out of high school.” said Rebecca Brown, the counselor of the Bruin Academy.

They accept up to 75 students a year, most with less than the required credits to graduate. The staff in the Bruin Academy decided to do a door decorating contest to inspire school spirit and get students involved in more activities.

In the past years the academy has participated in the homecoming door decorating contests, but this year they made the decision to host their own contest. Each classes second hour was asked to work together to decorate a Halloween themed door with the winning class receiving a donut party.

The classroom door’s themes ran from graveyards, to horror, and one class even created a joker themed door complete with a black light above the door. The creativity the students displayed is one that the Bruin Academy teachers are praising. Every student put effort into creating a unique theme for their classroom door which paid off as the praise judges have been giving have all been extremely complimentary.

“It gave the students a chance to think outside the box from what happens on a normal day at school,” says Brown.

The Bruin Academy hopes to continue this new tradition in hopes that their students teamwork and creativity continues to grow like it has for them this year.
