The Bluestem Medical Foundation will host its fifth annual “Heart Walk and 5K Run” on Saturday May 19. The proceeds from the even supports Jane Phillips Medical and Bluestem Cardiology.

The Bluestem Medical Foundation was founded in 1980, Mike Wilt is the Executive Director for the Foundation, which prior to this event held an event in coordination with the American Heart Association.

“In 2014, we made the decision that all money raised in Bartlesville stays in Bartlesville,” Wilt said. “We decided to host our own separate event.”

The race begins at Jane Phillips Medical Center, and follows different paths depending on whether or not participants are doing the 5K run or the 1K walk. This year the race course is certified, and the runners will be chip timed.

“We took the extra step to have the 5K course registered, and runners chip timed,” Wilt said. “We’re hoping that proves to be successful, having a certified course and chip time is attractive to runners.”

While Wilt could not share specific numbers on the event, he reinforced that the numbers are not as important.

“What we strive to do is increase our participation level each year,” Wilt said. “I think the people that participate can be confident they are helping an organization in their backyard and their neighbors.”

Registration for both the 1K and 5K is $25, and more information on registering can be found at:
