Tonight will be the most crucial game of the season thus far, as the Bruins take on their first district match up against Booker T. Washington, the defending 6A-II champion. Bartlesville, led by running back DeAndre Young and defensive stars Hunter Marquez and Cody Winters, the starting corner back filling in for injured player Shane Simpson.

Senior Cody Winters believes in “trusting the process” of new head coach Lee Blankenship, who has plans to turn the team around from its former ways.

“To keep trusting the coaches when they say to trust the process, to really watch film on Booker T to get a feel of how they plan then to have a great week of practice with the right mindset going into the first week of district play,” Winters said.

Booker T is a powerhouse on the defensive side, featuring the 24th player in the nation and number one safety Dax Hill, who recently committed to the University of Michigan. Hill is starting at outside wide receiver.

“They seem like they have a few high caliber athletes that their offense revolves around, and one of those is Dax Hill. I’m really looking forward to lining up against him an to shut him down,” Winters said.

Winters said he enjoys being a leader for the younger players, along as a leader for the community.

“I just remembered when I was looking up to the varsity players and the seniors and knowing how much influence that they had on me really pushes me to be the best role model on and off the field,” Winters said. “Yes, it’s about having  a great work ethic on the football field but off the field is just as important. In the classroom, in the halls and before and after games are also big places that the community and especially younger kids are watching.”

The Bru-Crew is still looking to make their presence heard tonight despite it being an away game. Winters is looking forward to the energy in the student section. The Bru-Crew was ranked the number two Fans in the Stands by Fox 23’s Heather Geller this past week for going crazy with the buckets.

“I know that it may be harder to have as many people there being a Thursday game, but the team is helped tremendously when we can hear that we have the whole high school right there with us. I’m looking forward to them being crazy, loud, and breaking buckets like usual,”  Winters said.
